A moment in time that forever changed the landscape of USA hockey, college hockey, and high school hockey, particularly here in Massachusetts. Following the 1980 Winter Olympics, there was an explosion of participation in youth hockey programs throughout New England. Then in the 1981, Bobby Carpenter of Beverly, MA and St. John's Prep High School became the first American-born player selected in the first-round of the NHL Entry Draft (third overall). Later that year he became the first player in history to go directly from American high school hockey to the NHL.
